Model a honeymoon intro rate then the revert rate.
An introductory or honeymoon rate applies for a set opening period, after which the loan reverts to the lender’s ongoing rate. The repayment you see in the first year is not the repayment you will be making for most of the loan. This shows both figures so the reversion is a planned event rather than a surprise.
Because the introductory period is short relative to the loan term, the revert rate does far more to the total cost. A sharp opening rate attached to a high ongoing rate is usually worse over the full term than a steady rate throughout. The Comparison Rate helps here, because it accounts for the reversion.
Some introductory offers come with conditions — a fee that starts after the period, restrictions on extra repayments, or an offset that only becomes available later. Read what changes at the reversion date, not just the rate.
A calculator gives you a starting figure. What a lender will actually approve depends on your income, expenses, credit history and the property, and it varies between lenders. We compare more than 40 lenders on our panel and will tell you where you genuinely stand — see our home loan, refinancing and car loan services, or the suburb pages for Werribee, Tarneit and Point Cook.
Sometimes, but the revert rate and the full-term cost matter more than the opening period. Compare on the Comparison Rate and the ongoing rate.
Usually yes, subject to a new lender’s assessment and any costs of switching. Plan the comparison before the reversion date rather than after.
